American Literary Manuscripts in the Andover-Harvard Theological Library: A Checklist PHILIP B. EPPARD and ALAN SEABURG Harvard Divinity School With the publication of the second edition of American Literary Manuscripts in 1977, researchers in American literature were given an invaluable reference tool.1 It gives reports on 600 libraries' hold ings of the papers of 2,750 American writers. Although the number of libraries reporting holdings in the second edition of ALM is more than double the number reporting in the first edition of 1960, there are some important omissions. The absence of the Harvard Univer sity Archives is one notable gap in coverage. Another Harvard li brary not represented is the Andover-Harvard Theological Library of Harvard Divinity School. The purpose of this checklist, therefore, is to fill one gap in the second edition of ALM. The Andover-Harvard Theological Library specializes in the col lection of materials relating to Unitarianism and Universalism." It accepted responsibility for preserving the papers of Unitarian minis ters and organizations because the Divinity School has had for 150 years a close association with the Unitarian movement in the United States. With the acquisition of the library of the Universalist Histor ical Society in 1976 it expanded its collecting interests to include materials relating to the Universalists, who merged with the Unitari ans in 1961.
