Abstract— This paper proposes a Navigator system in
ubiquitous learning log system called SCROLL(System for
Capturing and Reminding Of Learning Log). Navigator
system supports learning in terms of visualization of learning
logs stored in SCROLL system. It informs learners of what
and where other learners have learned visually and
recommend other learning logs which are located close to them
and navigate them to the recommended logs. By letting them
aware of other learning logs around them and guide to show
them where they are located, it provides them more
opportunities to learn from experience where they can make
discoveries through first-hand observations, instead of reading
or hearing about the knowledge. It is thus expected to lead
learners to gain more knowledge.

I. INTRODUCTION
In recent years, the world smartphones market is growing
rapidly [1]. Early smartphones were devices that mainly
combined the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA)
and a mobile phone. Emergence of mobile phones and PDAs
along with wireless technology allowed on-line
communication in various places such as on campus, at
home, train stations or airports.
The functions of the smartphones have been expanded
thanks to the evolution of the technology and now they came
equipped with a multi-touch interface, a full browser, GPS,
an acceleration sensor and so on. With these useful features
added, smartphones have been gaining their popularity. Thus
ubiquitous environment has been realized. It lead to a growth
of ubiquitous and mobile learning environment which has
been drawing researchers’ attention these days as an
effective learning method to improve learners’ various
abilities [2].
The ubiquitous learning environment includes the CSUL
(Computer Supported Ubiquitous Learning). CSUL takes
place in variety of learning spaces such as classrooms, home
and museums. It provides learners with various information
using the contextual data like location (Longitude and
Latitude), surrounding objects, temperature and so on [3].
We have developed SCROLL (System for Capturing and
Reminding of Learning Log). It provides learners with ULLs
(ubiquitous learning logs) in order to let them learn
knowledge or skills from experience in their daily lives. The
goals of SCROLL are lying in helping users to record easily
their learning experiences and recall them via their
surrounding contexts, and recommending other learners'
learning experiences, finding out individuals' learning habits
and supporting their learning in accordance with personal
learning habits [4].
This research proposes a Navigator system to fulfill the
goals of SCROLL. Navigator system informs learners of
what and where other learners have learned visually and
recommend other learning logs which are located close to
them and navigate them to the recommended logs. By letting
them aware of other learning logs around them and guide to
show them where they are located, it provides them more
opportunities to learn from experience where they can make
discoveries through first-hand observations, instead of
reading or hearing about the knowledge. It is thus expected
to lead learners to gain more knowledge.
The rest of the paper is organized as follows. After
introducing SCROLL in Section 2, we detail the proposed
Navigator system in Section 3. Finally, we provide a
conclusion of this study and some ideas for future works in
Section 4.
II. SCROLL
In recent years, our lives have been changed rapidly with
the evolution of the mobile devices. For example, we used to
take notes when we study or work (Figure 1). We take notes
for reviewing what we have learned. However, the form of
note taking has been changed due to the emergence of
various kinds of mobile devices. We can capture what we
have learned by photos or videos instead of note taking. We
call each piece of knowledge we have learned a learning log.
Many researches have focused on facilitating this kind of
“informal note” taking such as [5], [6]. Learning log in this
paper is defined as a recorded from of knowledge or learning
experience acquired in our daily lives.
SCROLL is based on a learning cycle called LORE
(Log-Organize-Recall-Evaluate) and it consists of four basic
elements:
(1) Log: When a learner faces a problem in the daily life,
s/he may learn some knowledge by him/herself, or ask others
for a help in terms of questions. The system records what
s/he learned during this process as a ULLO (ubiquitous
learning log object).
(2) Organize: When a learner tries to add a ULLO, the
system compares it with other ULLOs, categorizes it and
shows the similar ULLOs if exist. By matching similar
objects, the knowledge structure can be regulated and
organized.
(3) Recall: A learner may forget what s/he has learned
before. Rehearsal and practice can help him/her to recall past
ULLOs and to shift them from short-term memory to long-
term one. Therefore, the system assigns some quizzes and
reminds the learner of past ULLOs.
(4) Evaluate: It is important to recognize what and how
the learner has learned by analyzing the past ULLOs, so that
s/he can improve what and how to learn in the future.
Therefore, the system refines and adapts the organization of
the ULLOs based on the learners’ evaluation and reflection
[3].
Learning processes with SCROLL are shown by Figure 2
and 3. Figure 2 is a user interface of registering a new ULLO,
