Research Report Razvan Porumb* An Orthodox Model of Practical/Pastoral Theology DOI 10.1515/ijpt-2017-0006 Abstract: This study explores the Orthodox vision of theology as holistic, where liturgical and sacramental life on the one hand, and social action and commit- ment on the other hand are inextricably connected. Theology appears as an inseparable whole and therefore, all theology is implicitly practical/pastoral. The study approaches the Orthodox response to the western perspective of pastoral theology as engagement of the entire community of the Church. The concept of theosis is presented as “engine” and ultimate goal of Orthodox practical/pastoral theology. The study emphasises the fundamental importance of liturgical, eu- charistic and sacramental life in the life of the Orthodox Church. It also addresses the concepts of withdrawn “inner life” and monasticism, which evidence the tension between the rejection of the world on the one hand and social “incarna- tional” involvement on the other. Keywords: Orthodox Christianity, pastoral theology, Eucharistic Liturgy, monasti- cism Zusammenfassung: Dieser Aufsatz untersucht die orthodoxe Vorstellung einer holistischen Theologie, in der das liturgische und sakramentale Leben unauflö- slich mit sozialem Engagement und Handeln verquickt ist. Theologie erscheint darin als ein untrennbares Ganzes; jedwede Theologie ist daher implizit praktisch bzw. pastoral. Der Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit der orthodoxen Antwort auf das westliche Verständnis von Pastoraltheologie als die Einbeziehung der gesamten Kirchengemeinschaft. Darin wird das Konzept der Theosis als Motor und letztes Ziel orthodoxer praktischer bzw. pastoraler Theologie vorgestellt. Der Aufsatz unterstreicht die grundlegende Bedeutung liturgischen, eucharistischen und sak- ramentalen Lebens für das Leben der orthodoxen Kirche.
