PRAGMATIC TRANSLATION OF THE QUARANTINE/LOCKDOWN
CLASSIFICATIONS IN THE PHILIPPINES:
AN ATTEMPT TO TRANSLATE PANDEMIC WORDS AND MEANINGS
Ever since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic begins, countries from around the world have implemented
quarantine or lockdown restrictions to prevent the spread of Corona Virus and its variants. Te Philippine
government started to announce the enforcement of quarantine/lockdown restrictions last March 16, 2020.
Because of the increasing cases of infection and increasing death statistics, quarantine/lockdown has been
specifed and categorized using several terms. Tese terms, all of which are written in the English language
are highly technical. Te study, therefore, will attempt to translate these diferent quarantine classifcations
into Filipino and show how these translations may become more efective and communicative. Pragmatic
translation will serve as the methodology to translate these quarantine/lockdown classifcations. Te analysis
of the procedure will lead to the idea that pragmatic translation is about being communicative. Tis
translation may give a clearer picture of local quarantine/lockdown specifcations that eventually leads to a
better comprehension of the said regulations.
