COMAMONAS TESTOSTERONI BACTEREMIA IN A
PATIENT WITH PERFORATED ACUTE APPENDICITIS

Comamonas testosteroni is an uncommon isolate in the clinical laboratory as a
human pathogen. C. testosteroni most commonly emerges in abdominal pathologies
especially in perforated appendicitis. In Turkey we report first time a case of
bacteremia due to this organism, in a 22-year-old man with perforated acute appendi-
citis. The organism was shown to be susceptible to routine antibiotics so it was easily
eliminated even after having caused a bacteremia.

Introduction
The genus Comamonas includes the species Comamonas (formerly Pseu-
domonas) acidovorans, Comamonas testosteroni (C. testosteroni) and Coma-
monas terrigena [1]. All are motile by means of a polar tuft of up to six flagella,
with the distinctive feature of having a long wavelength. Acid is not produced in
OF glucose medium, thus these organisms are alkaline pseudomonads.
C. acidovorans is the most common representant of the group isolated from such
