Bonapartia Goode & Bean, 1896 is currently a valid genus of fish containing the single species Bonapartia pedaliota
Goode & Bean, 1896 (Eschmeyer, 1990, Eschmeyer et al., 1998, Fricke et al., 2021). The date of publication is 23 August
(Jordan & Evermann, 1898: 2843; see also Cohen, 1963). The name Bonapartia Büttikofer, 1896 (Aves: Pycnonotidae)
was published in June 1896 according to the publication itself but on 15 July according to the wrapper of the relevant
volume (Richmond, 1902, Dickinson, 2005). Thus, Bonapartia Goode & Bean, 1896 is a junior homonym of Bonapartia
Büttikofer, 1896. Goode & Bean (1898 [in Jordan & Evermann, 1898]) already recognized this as a case of homonymy
and published the replacement name Zaphotias Goode & Bean, 1898.
Bonapartia Büttikofer, 1896 was proposed as a replacement name for Gymnocrotaphus Büttikofer, 1896, which is
preoccupied by Gymnocrotaphus Günther, 1859 (Teleostei: Sparidae). The type species of Bonapartia Büttikofer, 1896,
Brachypus tigus Bonaparte, 1850, was synonymized with Pycnonotus tympanistrigus Müller, 1836 by Rand & Deignan
(1960). Therefore, Bonapartia Büttikofer, 1896 is currently considered to be a junior synonym of Pycnonotus Boie, 1826
(Rand & Deignan, 1960). However, recent phylogenetic analysis has shown this genus to be paraphyletic (Shakya & Shel-
don, 2017). As a result, several genera have been reinstated (del Hoyo, 2020). Pycnonotus tympanistrigus has not been
sampled in molecular phylogenetic studies but its morphology is quite distinctive (del Hoyo, 2020). Thus, it is possible
that the name Bonapartia Büttikofer, 1896 will be reinstated in a future revision of genus limits.
In addition to Goode & Bean (1898 [in Jordan & Evermann, 1898]), several authors have acknowledged the seniority
of Bonapartia Büttikofer, 1896 over Bonapartia Goode & Bean, 1896. Jordan (1920) noted that Bonapartia Goode &
Bean, 1896 was preoccupied and was replaced by Zaphotias Goode & Bean. Borodin (1930) and Roule & Angel (1933)
treated Zaphotias as a valid genus. Golvan (1962: 26–27) noted that the name Bonapartia Goode & Bean, 1896 was pre-
occupied and represented a senior synonym of Zaphotias Goode & Bean, 1898 which he listed as a valid genus. Witzell
(1973) stated that Zaphotias is probably the correct genus name for Bonapartia pedaliota but still placed it in the syn-
onymy of Bonapartia Goode & Bean, 1896. Eschmeyer et al. (1998: 1866) and Fricke et al. (2021) stated that Bonapartia
Goode & Bean, 1896 is “possibly” preoccupied by Bonapartia Büttikofer, 1896, yet acknowledged that the former was
published after 20 July 1896 and probably on 24 August 1896, whereas the latter was published in June 1896.
Bonapartia Büttikofer, 1896 does not qualify for reversal of precedence relative to Bonapartia Goode & Bean, 1896
under Article 23.9.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (International Commission on Zoological
Nomenclature, 1999), because the name was used as valid after 1899 (e.g., Richmond, 1902, Robinson & Kloss, 1923,
Wolters, 1977). Thus, Zaphotias Goode & Bean, 1898 is the valid genus name for Bonapartia pedaliota, which becomes
Zaphotias pedaliotus. The specific epithet pedaliotus is an adjective and follows the gender of Zaphotias (cf. Article 31.2
of the Code), which is masculine.
