ORIGINAL ARTICLE Implementation of the personal healthcare services on automotive environments Kabsu Han • Minwoo Jung • Jeonghun Cho Received: 21 December 2012 / Accepted: 15 March 2013 Ó Springer-Verlag London 2013 Abstract One of the main purposes of personal health- care devices is for elderly people with chronic illness that needs a health monitoring continuously in common life. There are several standard specifications for personal healthcare devices to interact each other safely and com- patibly. Depending on evolution of technology, the elderly and the chronic disease can have their own personal healthcare devices, and they can monitor themselves easily. However, some kind of limitation is still remaining in their life even if they have powerful smart devices. In situation that they need to drive and go to get treatment and to prepare medicine, automotive system does not support interfaces for personal healthcare devices. Therefore, we discuss about several standards of the personal healthcare devices and interfaces for connection of personal health- care device. Also, automotive environments that include various network interfaces for infotainment and intercon- nection between infotainment system and devices and platform are considered. After that, we propose several implementations of personal healthcare services to support standard of personal healthcare devices on automotive system. The people of the world are getting older and a large number of elderly people may use healthcare device for therapies and monitoring. According to World Health Organization (WHO), the numbers of the people who have chronic degenerative diseases are 600 million worldwide and who have metabolic diseases are 90 million. They need personal healthcare devices for monitoring their disease. Today, because of the evolution of electronic device, personal healthcare device, which is based on microcon- troller technologies and easy to use, is widely spread. To interact with other devices compatibly, standard specifi- cations have developed by several work groups. The elderly and chronic illness, who need health monitoring and treatment, may drive a vehicle in common life and unavoidable situation. Terrible accident can happen when elderly and chronic driver get bad situations of health status in a running vehicle. To avoid bad situations, personal healthcare services on automotive environments need to be considered. Section 2 describes related works that considered ubiq- uitous computing in automotive environment and smart devices, and remote healthcare services. Section 3 describes backgrounds for standard specification of per- sonal healthcare services and Sect. 4 considers infotain- ment services on automotive environments. Section 5 describes experimental environment and finally, the last section presents conclusion and future works. K.
