How Italian citizenship is attributed and acquired is a topical issue of po- litical debate. It is also a central piece of the global regime of mobility, as yearly new acquisitions of Italian citizenship are the most numerous, in the world for non-residential reasons, and in Europe for residential reasons. Distancing itself from an evaluative reading of the Italian citizenship law and proposing a sociological approach to public action and legal interme- diation, the article aims at grasping the law in practice. It therefore opens a reflection on the logic of selection and discipline of citizenship applicants, within the implementation of the law. It crosses - instead of opposing - the analysis of citizenship-by-descent and citizenship-by-residence imple- mentation, and puts into light a tendency in trying to subscribe both modes of acquisition within a common paradigm of integration. It also shows the weight of economic and social capitals in determining different administra- tive and judicial trajectories, and sometimes outcomes.
