Seeding the Editorial
Garden: Revisiting a
Growth Metaphor

In two prior editorials (Journal of Management Education [JME], Volume
40, Issue 5, and Volume 41, Issue 5), we used a “seeding the garden” meta-
phor to discuss opportunities that journal editors have to nurture scholar-
ship in our domain (our “garden”) and the ways in which we do this work.
Here, we expand on this metaphor a bit to illuminate what we see as
another important aspect of cultivating our garden’s growth, and that is the
work of editorial advocacy and engagement. While there may not appear
to be an obvious connection between scholarship seeding and editorial
seeding, we believe our garden needs both to survive (Lund Dean &
Forray, 2017).
A little over a year ago we began to focus some of our “editors’ road-
shows” (institutional workshops and conference sessions) on reviewing
skills as part of our developmental outreach on behalf of JME. Our reason
for doing these sessions was not simply or only transactional as a way to
build reviewing capacity for JME, although certainly this is beneficial as our
submission rate grows. Our primary reason for adding reviewing skills to
our outreach repertoire was to build intentionally new forms of transforma-
tional opportunities that would encourage and inspire others to consider the
entire editorial process that grows and shapes the future success of JME and,
through it, the entire SoTL (scholarship of teaching and learning) in the
management education domain. In other words, we view these engagements
