ABSTRACT
This study examined parents’ role in the effective teaching and learning of mathematics in some
selected secondary schools in Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State. No variable was
manipulated and data were collected, the population for the study consists of the parents of the
students, in all the public secondary schools in Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Eight of the Secondary Schools were used for the study in this research. The total numbers of parents
used were one hundred and ten (110). The study was guided with three null hypotheses, which were
tested at 5% level of significance, using chi-square “(x
2
)” statistics of significance. The questionnaires
were sent out, result collated and the various responses were analyzed. The result of the study
indicated that only 36% of the participants assist their children in mathematics. Also variables such as
parents’ beliefs, home environment, and educational background of parents had significant influence
on parent’s role in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Teachers, educationists and leaders
should try to create awareness in parents they can contribute to the education of their children through
encouragement, provision of learning facilities and active assistance, among other strategies.

INTRODUCTION
The roles of parents in the effective teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools,
especially within the context of Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State, present a crucial
foundation for academic success. Parents play multifaceted roles in shaping their children's
mathematical abilities and fostering a positive learning environment. Understanding these roles is
pivotal in enhancing the educational landscape.
In this case study, the focus is on exploring the intricate roles parents play in their children's
mathematical education. These roles extend beyond conventional classroom settings and significantly
impact a student's attitude, motivation, and performance in mathematics.
The parental roles encompass various aspects. Firstly, the provision of a supportive and conducive
home environment that encourages a positive attitude towards mathematics is essential. Parents can
engage in simple yet effective activities, such as assisting with homework, initiating discussions about
the practical applications of mathematics, and showing enthusiasm and appreciation for the subject.
Moreover, fostering a collaborative relationship between parents, teachers, and students is crucial.
Parents can actively engage with teachers, participate in parent-teacher meetings, and support school
initiatives aimed at improving mathematical education. Financial and emotional support also forms a
part of the parental role. Encouraging access to additional learning resources, such as tutoring or
educational materials, and providing emotional support during challenging times can significantly
