Treatment of Stuttering in Children
Abstract
Introducton: Stutering is a communicaton difculty that creates problems
in speech freedom. It contains uncontrollable, refexive stufs, elongatons,
repettons of sounds, syllables, or words. At the same tme, it is accompanied by
feelings of frustraton, fear, shame and low self-esteem.
Aim: The aim of this review was the investgaton the treatment of stutering in
children.
Material-Methods: Extensive review of the recent literature was conducted
in electronic databases (Medline, Scopus and Google Scholar) through the
Associaton of Hellenic Academic Libraries (HEAL-Link) using the appropriate key
words: stutering, health, disease as well as a combinaton of them.
Results: Symptoms of stutering are accompanied by non-verbal behavior, such
as lack of eye contact and blinking; these symptoms are not observed in children
with normal speech difcultes. It is partcularly important the general level of
child's speech development be assessed throughout the diagnostc process in
order to ascertain whether there are additonal difcultes such as artculaton
or phonological difcultes. The existence and degree of severity of such speech
difcultes is usually taken into account so as therapeutc interventons to be
ranked and classifed when designing any treatment.
Conclusion: The stutering child makes an efort to stop or avoid stutering; it
causes the child an intense psychological stress and afects his whole life. Each
and every person who stuters has to cope, to a greater or lesser extent, with a
symptomatological ensemble.

Stutering is reported to have existed since antquity, and it was
known in all cultures. Hippocrates reported that stutering is
due to a type of dysfuncton of the speech organs or artculators
(Respiraton, Phonaton, Resonaton and Artculaton), as well
as owing to the delayed development of inner speech or verbal
thinking [1]. Aristotle believed that stutering is due to anatomical
malformaton of speech organs or artculators and especially of
the tongue [2].
Indeed, Ancient Egyptans had a symbol for stutering, which
depicted a tremble that started from the ground and ended in
the mouth. This symbolic representaton of an earthquake was
the moment of stutering [3].
The most widespread theories, between Antquity and the
Renaissance period, were those that considered that stutering
resulted from an anomaly or a disorder associated with the
structure and/or the functon of the tongue [4].
At the beginning of the 19th century, the frst papers were
published. The problem was then scientfcally examined and the
stmulus for the formaton of pedagogical and medical methods
for its reducton or even eliminaton was provided. Jean Marc
Gaspard Itard, a French physician, supported the view that
