The 16th International Annual Meeting of the
Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society with
participation of the International Society of
Dermatology
This meeting was under the patronage of His Excellency
Professor Doctor Hatem El-Gabaly, Minister of Health and
Population, and was held October 29 to November 2, 2007
in Cairo, Egypt. It was definitely a great success.
The meeting was organized by Prof. Zenab El-Gothamy,
MD, President (Ain-Shams University), Fadia Sorour, MD,
Secretary General (Al-Azhar University) and Assistant
Secretary General Bassel H. Mahmoud, MD (Ain-Shams
University). Luminaries present were Professor Zenab El-
Gothamy, MD, PhD (Egypt), Professor Uwe Wollina
(Germany), ISD Regional Meeting Chair, Professor Lawrence
Gibson, MD (USA), Editor and Chief of the International
Journal of Dermatology Editor among others.
Highlights of the opening ceremonies included the
Egyptian Women’s Dermatologic Society Award presented to
Professor Rokea el-Azhary, MD, PhD (USA) by Professor
Doctor Zenab El- Gothamy, MD, PhD. Also, the Maria
Duran Lecturer was Professor Doctor Leena Bruckner-
Tuderman, MD (Germany). She was awarded a certificate
commemorating this by Dr. Evangeline Handog, MD, FPDS,
FAAD (Philippines). The Maria Duran Fellowship award
went to Dr. Michelle Manuel (Philippines) and the Travel
Award for Young Dermatologist was presented by Prof. Uwe
Wollina to Jana Kellerova, MD (Czech Republic).
The scientific sessions included a dermatopathology
course conducted by Drs. Lawrence E. Gibson and David
A. Mehregan (USA) and a State of the Art Lecture was also
delivered by Dr. Gibson discussing an “Update on Cutaneous
Vasculitis”. There were five symposia covering “Oncology”,
and “Challenging Cases”, “What’s New” and two on
“Cosmetics”. An additional four forums included topics on
“Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma”, “Drugs”, “Connective
Tissue Diseases” and a “Residents’ Forum”. Four workshops
on “Tumescent Liposuction”, “Injection Lipolysis”, “Use of
Radiofrequency Technique in Dermatocosmetology –
Surgical and Non-surgical” and “Aesthetic Mesotherapy and
Dermaroller” rounded out these sessions.
Eight Plenary Lectures were highpoints and included,
“Disabling Pansclerotic Morphoea of Childhood: Report of
Three Cases and Review of the Literature 1980–2006” by Dr.
Uwe Wollina, “Epidermolysis Bullosa: New Classification
and Modern Standards in Diagnosis and Management” by
the Maria Duran Lecturer Prof. Leena Bruckner-Tuderman,
“Mohs Surgery” by Dr. Sumaira Aasi (USA), “Pityriasis
versicolor Hypopigmentation” by the Meeting President,
Prof. Zenab El-Gothamy, “Role of Dermatologists in
Modern Hospital Practice” by Dr. Rokea el-Azhary
“Methamphetamine Abuse” by Dr. Kathleen J. Hectorne
(USA), “Panniculitis” by Dr. David A. Mehregan and
“Melasma: Evidence and Experience Based Approach” by
Dr. Evangeline B. Handog (Philippines).
Equally enjoyable and memorable were the social events
which included Nile Cruise, watching a mini concert at the
Dr. Rokea el-Azhary (USA) receiving the Egyptian Women’s
Dermatologic Society Award from the meeting organizer and
president, Dr. Zenab El-Gothamy (Egypt) during the opening
ceremonies
