Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery • October 2020
for potentially investing in technology to facilitate a
streamlined and standardized audio conversion. How-
ever, this effort could be propagated as a collaboration
between authors and journals where the authors are
offered the option to upload an audio record of their
article to expand its reach. In addition, software devel-
opment, possibly in the form of a journal mobile appli-
cation, would be required to enable readers to toggle
quickly between different article sections and change
audio speeds to enhance their educational experience.
The number of times an audio article is played can be
used as a metric for assessing the impact of such inno-
vative forms of medical education. Besides technologi-
cal barriers, audio journals would deprive their readers
of the images that are so critical in plastic surgery.
Despite the overwhelming dominance of print pub-
lications, audio media are making strides in the field of
scientific publications.

With gradual millennial transi-
tion toward online information, in both text and audio
forms, audio publishing of research articles is a win-win
situation that allows journals to reach out to a vast listen-
ership and authors to make the best use of their time.

Breast Surgery in the Time of Global Pandemic:
Benefits of Same-Day Surgery for Breast Cancer
Patients Undergoing Mastectomy with Immediate
Reconstruction during COVID-19
Sir:
T
he coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic
has severely curtailed the American health care system.
In response to managing patients with breast cancer dur-
ing these unprecedented times, a COVID-19 pandemic
breast cancer consortium, consisting of leaders from many
national organizations, including the American Society
of Breast Surgeons, released an executive summary on
March 24, 2020, detailing prioritization of breast dis-
ease management.
1
The official guidelines were recently
published on April 24, 2020.
2
Cases are currently triaged
into three categories: A (immediate life-threatening
condition), B (does not need immediate action; can be
delayed for 6 to 8 weeks but no more), or C (stable and
can be delayed while COVID-19 dissipates).
