Chua Although social movements and constitutional law are closely connected, their relationship tends to be overlooked in Asian constitutional law scholarship. Drawing from the socio-legal subeld of law and social movements, this chapter highlights the signicance of studying social movements and their relationship to constitutional law in Asia. Because Asian jurisdictions are diverse, running the gamut from liberal democracies to various shades of illiberalism, this chapter does not emphasize any shared characteristics among social movements in the region. Rather, it considers social movement emergence, strategies and tactics, and both litigation and non-litigation outcomes in its examination of the relationship between social movements and constitutional law. It concludes with lessons from the socio-legal study of law and social movements, as well as from legal scholarship that has been inuenced by this eld, to o|er suggestions on how Asian constitutional law scholars could approach the study of movement-constitution dynamics.
