ABSTRACT
Médecins Sans Frontières recently released a comprehensive report on mental health in
Kashmir: it concluded that half of all residents of the valley have "mental health problems".
The report found that nearly 1.8 million adults (45%) of Kashmir's adult population—suffer
from some form of mental distress. A majority (93%) have experienced conflict-related
trauma. An average adult was found to have witnessed around eight traumatic events during
his or her lifetime. More than 70% of adults have experienced or witnessed the sudden or
violent death of someone they knew. According to the report, 50% of women and 37% of men
are likely to suffer from depression; 36% of women and 21% of men have a probable anxiety
disorder; and 22% of women and 18% of men suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

INTRODUCTION
Disability has different meanings and
varies from person to person. As from its
name it is clear that it is the inability of a
person to perform a particular task or job,
while as others in the same age group with
similar sex and culture can perform all
those activities with ease. WHO has
clearly demarcated the terms related to
disability as impairment, handicap and
disability [1]. Disability is defined as
restriction or lack of ability to perform an
age and activity in the manner or within
the range considered normal for a human
being. As we as civilised humans prefer to
be more polite with even these people; so
we must call them differently abled or
specially abled persons. In addition, we
can also use a more suitable term as
persons with “res-ability (restricted
ability)” [2].
We must know that disability can affect
any part of the body, thus can make people
partially defunct for some time, till they
motivate themselves to attain the heights.
Disability is known to us in terms of
blindness, low vision, hearing impairment,
locomotor disability, mental retardation,
psychiatric disability and mental illnesses.
Psychiatric disability may be defined as a
condition that arises due to severe
malfunctioning of mental and spiritual
health, and thus is an outcome of mental
illness. As per Libermann in 1993, this is
the substantial limitation in a major life
activity [3].
Mental illness leads to decreased
productivity and has a negative impact on
the quality of life of affected individuals
and their families. Annually, over 450
