XI-XIII: MENANDER’S GEORGOS, EPICURUS, AND (PERHAPS) METRODORUS DAVID BLANK DAVID ARMSTRONG An Epicurean treatise on wealth and poverty, probably by Philodemus, is partially preserved in PHerc. 1570. The present article presents a revised edition of parts of three columns of this work (cols. XI-XIII), in which the critique of poverty in a speech from Menander’s Georgos is briefy quoted and paraphrased, then countered with observations brought to flter out the characteristics of poverty itself from those due to the false beliefs attached by men to poverty. Menander’s critique and the Epicurean counterarguments are presented by Philodemus, probably following Metrodorus’ On Wealth, in accordance with a methodological precept attributed to Epicurus. A good description of the papyrus was published by Joseph A. This article began with David Blank’s chance reading in col. XII 16 f., which then led to a lucky series of readings there and in col. XIII. David Armstrong, one of the frst editors of this papyrus, took a strong interest in the new read- ings and enthusiastically contributed sugges- tions, especially about Menander’s Georgos, in which he has never lost an abiding inter- est.
