This study uses meta-analysis and a systematic review of the literature to identify crucial factors that impact the generalizability of the findings. They are organizational culture, industry type, leadership styles, and contextual variables. The research offers insights into the ability of previous leadership behavior to predict future behavior. Although the study emphasizes the significance of considering contextual sensitivities in leadership research, it proposes effective strategies for enhancing the generalizability, such as utilizing blended methodologies, warning against the fallacy of generaliza- bility, employing a productive causal-modeling framework, expanding eligibility criteria, and targeting multiple sub-populations. The findings of this study have practical implications for leadership devel- opment programs and organizational practices, as well as theoretical implications for refining and expanding existing leadership theories. Introduction Leadership research has been a central focus within the realm of management and organizational behavior, to comprehend the various factors that contribute to effective leadership and its subsequent impact on organizational outcomes. 1 The intricate and ever-changing nature of human behavior and organizational dynamics presents a formi- dable challenge when attempting to draw definitive conclusions that can be universally applied to all organizations. The generalizability of research findings in diverse organiza- tional contexts has been a topic of ongoing debate and concern. 2 Generalizability, in the context of leadership research, refers to the extent to which research findings can be applied to different populations, settings, and conditions. 3 Within the realm of leadership research, the ability to generalize research findings is of utmost importance to ensure that leadership theories and practices remain relevant and general- izable across various industries, cultures, and organizational settings. Moreover, it is cru- cial to acknowledge that the field of leadership research is in a constant state of evolution, thereby rendering research findings susceptible to becoming outdated as new workplace trends and challenges emerge. 4 Motivated by the growing need to identify the factors that influence the generalizabil- ity of leadership research findings, the purpose of this study is to address two questions. How can the generalizability of research findings in the field of leadership be enhanced? How can researchers provide more generalizable and relevant insights for leaders oper- ating within diverse organizational contexts? To address these questions, this study em- ployed the meta-analysis method and conducted a systematic review of the existing liter- ature. This approach identified four key factors that influence generalizability and assess methodological limitations: organizational culture, industry type, leadership styles, and contextual variables. Furthermore, this research proposes effective strategies to improve Citation Hejazi, A. (2024). Assessing the generalizability of leadership re- search findings. Nuts About Leader- ship, 1(1), 11-17.
