Bemaschek 2nd Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University of Vienna, Austria Summary. Five patients with carcinoma of the cervix and one with carci- noma of the vagina were examined by both cystoscopy and endosonography. Both techniques revealed malignant infiltration of the bladder in 4 patients. In the other 2 cystocopy showed an intact bladder mucosa despite cystosono- graphic evidence of invasion of the bladder wall by tumor. Key words: Cystosonography - Cystoscopy - Bladder invasion Introduction Cystoscopy is essential in the staging of gynecologic cancer but however mucosal edema detectable by cystoscopy is not a reliable indicator of invasion of the bladder by tumor and endosonography has proved successful in confirming such invasion [1-4]. The aim of our study was to compare cystosonography and cystoscopy in the assessment of bladder wall invasion in 5 patients with cancer of the cervix and 1 patient with cancer of the vagina. Method We used a 17.5-Charri6re cystoscope (Fa. Wolf). Cystosonography was done with a 360~ rotation scanner (Fa. Kretztechnik) inserted into the bladder via the urethra through a 24-Charri6re resectoscope shaft. The scanner's during frequency could be varied between 5 and 6 MHz. Offprint requests to: Dr. H.
