CONSIDERATIONS ON SOME SPECIES OF HIPPOLYTE (DECAPODA, CARIDEA) FROM SOUTHERN EUROPEAN WATERS, H. NIEZABITOWSKII, H. HOLTHUISI, AND H. VARIANS BY J. E. GARCIA RASO1), M. E. MANJÓN-CABEZA1) and J. C. MARTÍNEZ I.2) 1) Departamento de Biologia Animal, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad de Málaga, E-29071 Málaga, Spain 2) Instituto de Oceanologia, Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnologia y Medio Ambiente, La Habana, Cuba ABSTRACT Preliminary samples taken from Zostera marina beds on the Mediterranean coast of southern Spain, have allowed us to obtain three species of Hippolyte. One of them, Hippolyte niezabitowskii, represents the first record for Spain and the western Mediterranean. Also, the morphology of the present material shows clear differences with that of specimens from the Adriatic and Ionian seas. A complementary description and some considerations on a presumably subspecific status are given. The capture of many specimens belonging to the complex H. varians-H. holthuisi (H. holthuisi represents a new record for the area) has allowed us to make a comparative analysis between populations from the Alborán Sea and from the Gulf of Cádiz, which has established the existence of consistent differences between these. RÉSUMÉ Des échantillons préliminaires provenant d'un herbier de Zostera marina du sud de l'Espagne, Méditerranée, nous ont permis d'obtenir trois espèces du genre Hippolyte. L'une d'elles, H. nieza- bitowskii, représente la première mention pour l'Espagne et la Méditerranée occidentale. Aussi, la morphologie du présent matériel montre de nettes différences avec celle des spécimens des mers Adriatique et Ionienne. Une description complémentaire et des considérations sur un possible statut subspécifique sont données. Le capture de nombreux spécimens appartenant au complexe H. varians-H. holthuisi (ce dernier représentant une nouvelle signalisation pour la zone) nous a permis de faire une analyse comparative des populations de la mer d'Alborán et du golfe de Cádiz, ce qui a montré l'existence de différences constantes entre elles.
