Saccharum officinarum. Recebido: 13/06/2016 Aprovado: 01/08/2016 Abstract: Thermotherapy is the method adopted by most plants of this departament to control against the infection of Sugar Cane Rickets (Ratoon Stunting disease, RSD) highly damaging to the crop sugar cane plants. Despite its benefits, the thermotherapy can reduce the budding index of its gems which can affect performance culture. This study aimed to determine the performance sprouting buds in field conditions using a completely randomized system in a factorial 5’x3’ subdivided plot, with six repetition and treatments consisted of five sugarcane cultivars (SP 5536; SP 3250; RB 7515; SP 1842; SP 2847), thermally treated with two temperatures (50°C/2h and 52°C/30 minutes) and another that was used without heat treatment - control. It was found that there was significant difference between the thermal treatment and the control sample (control). However, it was found that the varieties had different behaviors in the budding ability of gems due to the use of thermotherapy. It was found that some could suffer deleterious effects on budding and others were found to be benefiting from treatment. The SP 2847 and the SP 3250 varieties showed better indexes on the performance of budding compared to the others that were tested, but only when subjected to the regime of 50°C/2h, indicating a possible inductor and beneficial effect on their performance in the field.
