120 INTUS-LEGERE HISTORIA/ ISSN 0718-5456| EISSN 0719-8949/Año 2023, Vol. 17 N° 1, pp. 120-142 TOMAS DE POSESIÓN SIMBÓLICAS Y BAUTISMOS CARTOGRÁFICOS DE LAS ISLAS DEL PACÍFICO SEPTENTRIONAL A FINES DEL SIGLO XVIII Guadalupe Pinzón Ríos ∗ Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, México El objetivo de este texto es recapitular sobre la importancia que se dio a las islas ubicadas a lo largo de las costas del Pacífico Norte durante las exploraciones que desde San Blas se organizaron en 1774, 1775 y 1779, las cuales implicaron su toma de posesión simbólica y su inclusión en los diarios de navegación y mapas con fines geoestratégicos, políticos y marítimos. Lo relevante es ver cómo considerar a las islas en las exploraciones marítimas rebasaba el interés de un mero registro geográfico, sino que también significaba llevar a cabo la apropiación de espacios marítimos de una forma más integral que legitimaba” la presencia hispana y la extendía más allá de los litorales. Por otro lado, en el caso de las bahías amplias, la toma posesión de las islas también significó intentos por disuadir o en lo posible evitar el ingreso de navegantes de otras monarquías en dichas regiones. Esto en un intento por controlar espacios marítimos que hacia fines del siglo XVIII estaban cada vez más en disputa. Palabras claves: Islas; Pacífico septentrional; San Blas; Exploraciones. SYMBOLIC TAKEOVERS AND CARTOGRAPHIC BAPTISMS OF THE NORTHERN PACIFIC ISLANDS IN THE LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY The objective of this text is to recapitulate the importance given to the islands located along the coasts of the North Pacific during the explorations organized from San Blas in 1774, 1775, and 1779 and that implied their symbolic takeover and their inclusion in the navigation diaries and maps for geostrategic, political and maritime purposes. What is relevant is to see how considering the islands in maritime explorations went beyond their geographic registry, but also meant carrying out the appropriation of maritime spaces in a more integral way that extended and "legitimized" the Hispanic presence beyond the coastlines. On the other hand, in the case of the wide bays, taking possession of the islands also meant attempts to dissuade or as far as possible prevent the entry of navigators from other monarchies into those regions. This was an attempt to control maritime spaces that by the end of the 18th century were increasingly disputed.
