In most Western countries, interaction with the past in education is partly shaped in terms of (social) utility. Lessons must be learned from the past to serve present political, social, and educational ends and to cultivate good citizens. Historical consciousness thus comes to be shaped instrumentally. However, historical consciousness involves much more than moral instrumental- ization and is characterized by a sense of perspective and relativism. This rather essayistic article delves deeper into the notion of historical consciousness in relation to history of education, focusing especially on the Flemish case, in which memory politics and the use of history within education and in society at large have been omnipresent since 2010. (Red.) In den meisten westlichen Ländern ist die schulische Beschäftigung mit der Vergangenheit teilweise geprägt von Vorstellungen (sozialer) Nützlichkeit. Aus der Vergangenheit sollen Lehren gezogen werden um gegenwärtigen politischen, sozialen und pädagogischen Zielen zu dienen und um gute Bürger zu generieren. Dadurch entsteht eine instrumentelle Formung des historischen Bewusstseins. Allerdings geht „historisches Bewusstsein“ über die moralische Instrumentalisierung hinaus und zeichnet sich durch Sinn für Perspektiven und Relativität aus. Der eher essayistische Beitrag diskutiert den Begriff des historischen Bewusstseins in Bezug auf die Bildungsgeschichte, wobei vor allem das flämische Beispiel im Zentrum steht, wo seit 2010 Erinnerungspolitik und die Verwendung von Geschichte in der Schule und in der Gesellschaft allgemein omnipräsent sind.
