From the prioritisation of these scenarios, conclusions are drawn on the optimum scenario, not only from an energy savings point of view, but also by taking into consideration the rest of the aforementioned criteria. Introduction The building stock in Greece is responsible IRU RI WKH WRWDO HQHUJ\ FRQVXPSWLRQ RI WKH FRXQWU\ >@. Old, uninsulated buildings are responsible for larger amounts of energy consumption for heating and cooling spaces than newer buildings, on whose building envelope thermal insulation has been placed, in most cases. As some of these older buildings are part of the country’s architectural heritage, it is important to investigate techniques which can achieve their energy upgrade, without jeopardising their architectural and cultural characteristics. Especially masonry buildings, whose main component is a natural, long-lasting material, such as locally produced stone, with lifelong structural characteristics (its tensile / compressive strength does not deteriorate with time), their core materials should be respected, and the building’s upgrade should be made in ways that do not endanger their durability. It is thus important to investigate techniques which can upgrade them, from an energy point of view and also respect their structural characteristics. When only the criterion of the energy efficiency upgrade is taken into consideration, conclusions are drawn about an optimum solution, which might in practice not be feasible, due to environmental, aesthetical, cultural, technical or economic obstacles, while the optimum option, from an energy savings point of view, might not be the optimal, from an environmental or economic point of view.
