ABSTRACT
This paper describes a joint optometry and pharmacy student workshop which aims to meet IPEC competencies
while teaching students the roles of optometrists and pharmacists, common signs and symptoms of ocular allergy,
and the mechanism, use, and appropriate recommendations for common over-the-counter ocular allergy medi-
cations. Details are provided on the methods and materials used in the case-based ocular-allergy activity such
that it can be used as a model for other health professional workshops.
1. Format
The activity is a single 3 h workshop that incorporates a pre- and
post-knowledge assessment, and group case discussion about diagnosing
and managing ocular allergy.
2. Target audience
The activity was developed for first year optometry and pharmacy
students, but would also be applicable to medical, nursing, physician
assistant, and other healthcare student education.
3. Objectives
There were four interprofessional objectives derived from the
Interprofessional Education Collaborative’s (IPEC) competencies for this
workshop:
(1) Explain the roles and responsibilities of other providers, and how
the team works together to provide care, promote health, and
prevent disease (Roles and Responsibilities 4)
(2) Work in cooperation with those who receive care, and others who
contribute to or support the delivery of health services, and
programs (Values and Ethics 5)
(3) Listen actively, and encourage ideas, and opinions of other team
members (Communication 4)
(4) Reflect on individual and team performance for individual, as
well as team, performance improvement (Teams and Teamwork
8)
Objective 1 was attempted by having students participate in an ice
breaker activity. Objectives 2–4 were targeted to be achieved via a
guided group case discussion. Students’ perceptions of success in
achieving these competencies were assessed in a post-workshop survey.
There were also knowledge-based objectives of the workshop:
(1) Recognize and manage ocular allergy
(2) Recognize the common signs and symptoms of ocular allergy
(3) Recognize indications and contraindications of common eye al-
lergy medications
(4) Recommend appropriate over-the-counter recommendations for
ocular allergy
(5) Provide counseling for patients using topical ocular medications
