R Resilience to Domestic Violence: Study on Tribal Women of Madhya Pradesh, India Priyanka Kacker and Y. K. Nagle School of Forensic Psychology, National Forensic Sciences University, Gandhinagar, India Definition Domestic violence is a pattern of assaultive and/or coercive behaviors, including physical, sexual, and psychological attacks, as well as economic coer- cion, that adults or adolescents use against their intimate partners (Schechter & Edelson, 1999). Aim and Scope The entry has consciously focused on issues related to contributing factors of resilience to domestic violence against tribal women of Madhya Pradesh and tried to recommend a feasi- ble and suitable intervention strategies to prevent domestic violence. The study has been largely cross-sectional and exploratory in nature. MP state is regarded as crime-prone regions with a high incidence and prevalence of crimes against women (NCRB, 2021). In terms of development indicators, Madhya Pradesh is counted among the least developed state (NITI Aayog National Multidimensional Poverty Index, 2021). Betul district of Madhya Pradesh was selected based on a combination of factors such as signicant numbers of tribal populations, those showing poor female development indices, areas with sig- nicant crime rates against women, poor hygienic living condition, low literacy rate, and alcohol abuse (Basu and Das, 2021; Chauhan et al., 2022). Overview on Domestic Violence Against Women Violence against women is endemic in society. It is estimated that 14% to 20% of women will experi- ence rape at some point in their lives (Kilpatrick & Resnick, 1993; Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000), 25% to 28% will be physically abused in a sexual-romantic relationship (Strauss & Gelles, 1990), and 8% to 24% will be stalked by someone known or unknown to them (Sheridan et al., 2003; Spitzberg, 2002; Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). When added to the 25% to 35% likelihood that the average adult woman has been sexually abused as a child (Briere & Elliott, 2003), the epidemiology of interpersonal violence against women is a pressing social issue. Physical abuse in romantic relationships is mostly accompanied by psychological and verbal abuse. In the United States, more than 40% women between the ages of 18 and 64 had experienced one or more forms of violence including childhood abuse (17.8%), physical assault (19.1%), rape (20.4%), and intimate partner violence (34.6%) (Plichta & Falik, 2001).
