Durga 20.1 INTRODUCTION SM has become an integral part of modern society, and it has a profound impact on the mental state of the community. The inuence of online platforms on people’s MH and well-being has been the subject of numerous studies, and the results are mixed. While these platforms offer many benets, such as facilitating communica- tion, providing access to information, and connecting people, they can also have some negative effects on the mental state of the community. One of the most signi- cant effects of online platforms on the mental state of the community is social com- parison. The culture of comparison fostered by SM encourages people to compare their lives with others. They compare their physical appearance, lifestyle, job, and relationships with those of others on digital platforms. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression, particularly in young people who may be more susceptible to the pressure of social comparison [1]. Another signicant effect of digital platforms on the mental state of the community is increased social isolation. Despite their name, these platforms can actually lead to social isolation as people spend more time online and less time interacting with others in-person. This can lead to loneliness, depression, and anxiety, particularly in those who are more vulnerable, such as older adults and people with MH issues. Online platforms can also have a detrimental impact on self-esteem. In addition to the negative effects on MH, online platforms can also have a signicant impact on physical health. Spending too much time online can lead to poor sleep quality, eye strain, and a sedentary lifestyle. These can all have negative consequences for physical health, including weight gain, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. While online platforms offer many benets, they can also have negative effects on the mental state of the community. It is important to use them in moderation and be mindful of their impact on mental and physical health. By DOI: 10.1201/9781003317456-20
