Brachyuran crabs from the Mexican Pacific and surrounding areas are well known and have been treated in several
monographs (e.g., Garth 1958; Hendrickx 1997, 1999). Checklists of species occurring off western Mexico and the
eastern tropical Pacific are also available (e.g., Hendrickx 1993, 1995, 2005). In many cases, particularly in species
inhabiting the continental shelf or deeper waters, however, there is a significant lack of records due to sampling difficulty
and cost.
A recent review of Chasmocarcinidae by Ng & Castro (2016) set the number of species of this family to 51 in 16
genera and 3 subfamilies. As revised by Ng & Castro (op. cit.), the genus Chasmocarcinus now contains 11 species, and
is the only genus of Chasmocarnidae occurring in the eastern Tropical Pacific where it is represented by three species: C.
gemmatus Ng & Castro, 2016 (Costa Rica); C. latipes Rathbun, 1898 (west coast of Baja California and Gulf of
California, Mexico, to Peru); and C. longipes Garth, 1940 (Costa Rica to Ecuador). Chasmocarcinus ferrugineus
Glassell, 1936 and C. panamensis Serène, 1964, are now considered junior subjective synonyms of C. latipes and C.
longipes, respectively (Garth 1940, Ng & Castro 2016).
During sampling operations in the Gulf of California, Mexico, a series of specimens of C. latipes was collected and
is reported herein, and additional notes on their habitat are documented. The specimens were collected during several
research cruises (SIPCO I, April 1981; CORTES 2 and 3, March and August 1985; WAGNER-02, July-August 2010)
aboard the R/V El Puma, of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, in the Gulf of California. Environmental
data were taken from Hendrickx & Salgado-Barragán (1991) and Hendrickx (1997). Illustrations of specimens or part of
the specimens were drawn (Camera Lucida) or photographed with a digital camera or with a scanning electron
microscope. Most of the material is kept in the "Regional Collection of Marine Invertebrates" (ICML-EMU), in
Mazatlán, Mexico. Abbreviations used are: St., sampling station; M, male; F, female; FF, ovigerous female; CW,
carapace width.
