The 100th anniversary of the publication of the Einstein field equations of general relativity in late 1915 is an appropriate occasion for this special edition, which reprints the Lawson English translation and adds further materials. The additional materials include a Reading Companion consisting of thirteen commen- taries, notes on the foreign-language editions, plus three further appended documents. The Reading Companion is provided by Hanoch Gutfreund, Director of the Einstein Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Ju¨rgen Renn, Director of the Max Planck Institute for History of Science in Berlin. As those who have read (or attempted to read) Einstein’s book know, though the material is presented accessibly, it is certainly challenging, and the Reading Companion is a valuable and useful supplement to the text. It will be especially useful for those wishing to use Einstein’s booklet in teaching. The Reading Companion consists of thirteen commentaries, taking the reader systematically through the text. The commentaries are successful in three ways.
