This study therefore assessed teachers' capacity building and sustainable development in secondary schools in Rivers state. Three research questions and hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. All teachers from the 245 public secondary schools in Rivers State constituted the population and sample size of 1500 teachers were randomly selected for the study and they constituted the study respondents. An instrument called teachers' capacity building and sustainable development questionnaire (TCBSDQ) was used for data collection and its reliability coefficient was computed at 0.78. Mean and standard deviation was used to analyze the research questions and z- test statistics to test the hypotheses. Findings of the study revealed that teachers agreed that all other types of capacity building programmes were made available to them except for in-service training that they bene fitted from all the programmes made available to them while their major challenge was impact assessment. Some of the recommendations made were that the government should often provide capacity building pto grammes for teachers, provide a scholarship scheme which will enhance the skill of teachers and help in upgrading of their certificates and current trends of life should be included in the capacity building programmes offered to teachers such as information and communication technology (lCT). Key words: teachers, productivity, and development. 241
