This gives rise to the need of research in the area of QWL. In this context this study is an attempt to analyse the antecedents and consequences of QWL at the workplace. This study based on secondary data taken from newspapers, magazines, governmental reports, research papers etc. analyses the antecedents and consequences of QWL so that it can bring benefits at the workplace for both the employees as well as for the organisation. Keywords: Quality of Work life, Job Satisfaction, Introduction With rising levels of education and consequent aspirations, and growing employee consciousness of their rights resulting in social mobility, it has become imperative for the Indian organisations to be more and more concerned about the quality of work life (QWL). The traditional master- slave pattern of relationship or even carrot-and-stick approach are fast yielding place to supportive, consultative and participative approaches treating employees not merely as "hands" but assets which should always grow rather than depreciate. This is why there is an urgent need of a study to understand the present status of QWL in the Indian organisations and the measures required to ameliorate the same. The term "quality of work life" (QWL) is used in the context of the state of certain environmental and humanistic values in organisations. QWL is closely related to the more general term 'quality of life' since life at the work place is an integral part of the total life space. Excessive concern for economic development and materialism all over the world has led to the neglect of qualitative aspects of life. This has happened in India as well. Centuries old interest in quality of life through the principles of contentment, purity of mind and spiritualism in this country could not prevent the onslaught of materialism. However, due to the advent of interest in the larger area of quality of life in most of the countries of the world, QWL has become a focus of growing concern for the last few years. However, from historical perspective this recent concern for QWL in organisations can be seen as the latest and in many ways the culmination of a string of reform movements that have attempted during the past several decades to protect the rights and interest of workers (Hackman & Suttle, 1977,p.6).
