ABSTRACT Inspite of the technological advancements and new generation learning apps, the first generation learners still find it difficult to express themselves in everyday classrooms. Keeping this in mind, the language lab team of Holy Cross College designed a working module. This was an attempt to effectively engage the learners during their weekly visit to the lab. This paper focuses on the different interactive worksheets to improve their LSRW skills. The paper also shares the methodology and the outcomes of the classroom research. Keywords: Working Module, Engagement, Communication, Interactivity, LSRW skills Introduction My Language Lab Workbook (Working Module) is a working module designed for the first year General English under graduate students of Holy Cross College (Autonomous), Trichy. During their weekly visit to the language lab, the students are guided to improve their LSRW skills through active language learning methods along with practical and teacher guided sessions. Though the primary focus is on improving the LSRW skills of the regional medium students, efforts are made to enhance high order thinking skills too. This customized workbook aims at improving the efficiency of the first generation learners by creatively implementing Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method in the language lab. The primary aim of this method is to allow the learners communicate in the target language. Here, the teacher takes up the role of a facilitator, rather than an instructor. Furthermore, the approach is a non-methodical system and hence no particular textbook was used for material production, instead a combination of effective worksheets for developing LSRW skills was made use. This is because, CLT teachers choose classroom activities based on their effectiveness for the learners. Various well known activities such as those opposed to grammar drills were compiled to be used in the working module. The activities used promoted collaboration and fluency in the target language. Sparingly, free downloadable materials including pictures were also used.
