Yasufumi IRYU*, Toru NAKAMORI* and Tsutomu YAMADA* Pleistocene reef complex deposits, known as the Ryukyu Group, are distributed over the most of the Ryukyu Islands. A historical review of stratigraphical works published on this group during the last 100 years reveals that the point of view that the group consists of reef sedi- ments was not realized until recently. This paper aims to provide a basic framewark toward establishing a reef stratigraphy of the group. We here present a lithologic classification of limestones forming the group. These limestones are subdivided into one detrital unit plus four other units based on characteristic limestone-building organisms such as coral, rhodolith, Cyclo- clypeus-Operculina,and Halimeda. Depositional environment of these limestones is determined on the basis of the known distribution of biota and sediments in the modern reef complex around the Ryukyu Islands. Using such a framework, the group is shown to be divisible into a succes- sion of plural reef complex deposits by referring to stratigraphic examples of this group in the islands of Toku-no-shima and Okierabu-Jima. Key words: limestone, Pleistocene reef, Ryukyu Group, Ryukyu Islands. は じ め に 馬 毛 島以南 の琉 球列 島 には第 四紀更新 世 に堆積 した サ ンゴ礁 性 の石灰 岩が 分布 して お り,それ らは石灰 岩 と同時異 相 の砕 屑 岩 とあ わせ て琉 球層群 と よばれて い る.琉球 層群 は,かつ て のサ ンゴ礁複合 体 の堆積 物 と 段 丘堆積 物 よ りな るため,陸 上 か ら礁本 体 あ るい は前 縁 深部 とい う,深度 的 に も,空間的 に も多様 な環境 の もとで の堆積 物 に よって構成 されて いる.ま た,そ の 礁 複合体 や段 丘 は,第 四紀 海水準 変動 と琉球 弧 の地殻 変 動 の影響 を受 け なが ら,島 々の周 囲に発達 した もの であ る.こ のた め,琉 球層 群の 岩相 は上 下 に も側 方 に も変化 に富 む.し た が って琉球層 群 の層 位学 的研 究 に おい ては,通 常 の層位 学 で用 い られ る累重 関係 を重視 す るよ うな手 法 で は,層序 関係 を明確 に把握 し難 い. む しろ,特定 の時 期 のサ ンゴ礁複 合体 堆積 物 を層 序 区 分 単位 と して と らえる視 点 が必要 で あ る. そ こで,我 々は次 に述 べ る よ うな手 順 に よって,琉 球 層群 の層位 学 的お よび堆積 学 的研 究 を行 って きた. まず,琉球層 群 の石灰 岩 を,それ を構 成す る生物 遺骸, 特 に造 礁 生 物 の種 類 お よび組 成 に よ って岩 相 区分 す る.次 に,現在 のサ ンゴ礁 にお け る生 物相 お よび堆積 相 とこれ らの岩相 とを比較 す るこ とに よって,各 岩相 区分単 位 の堆 積環 境 を決定 す る.こ の知見 を もとに, 各岩相 の空 間的配 置 お よび相 互 の関係 な どの層位 学 的 情報 を考慮 す る と,特定 の時代 に形成 されたサ ンゴ礁 複合体 の堆積 物 を分離 して,識 別す る こ とが可 能 とな り,これ を1層序 区分単 位 と して扱 う.この よ うに し て識 別 された層序 区分 単位 は,第 四紀 海水 準変 動 と琉 球弧 の テク トニ ックな運動 による"相 対 的海面 変動" の影響 下 で形 成 され た,過去 の サ ンゴ礁複 合体 の発展 過程 を反 映 してお り,シー クエ ンス層 位学 的 区分単位 に相 当す る といえ よ う. *東 北 大 学 理 学 部 地 質 学 古 生 物 学教 室 .Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Faculty of Science, Tohoku University, Aobayama, Sendai 980, Japan.
