While writing this tribute for the founder of this journal, Nathan Sivin, we are
mindful of the many eulogies that have already been published. The broad
contours of Nathan Sivin’s life trajectory are known; his scholarly accomplish-
ments, and his profound influence on colleagues and students alike are thus
now widely acclaimed. (See References.) As the three students who worked
most closely with Nathan (he insisted we call him by his first name, even as
