Abstract
Sonochemistry is the study of applications of sound waves to chemical processes and reactions. It is an extension
of acoustic cavitation, which occurs as a liquid is subjected to ultrasound or high intensity sound. Cavitation
occurs within a sample due to rapidly changing pressure caused by sound waves. Ultrasound can greatly improve
the chemical reactivity of the system, by exciting the molecular and atomic modes of the sample. Ultrasonic
cavitation is the momentary formation of vacuum bubbles in the liquid medium, which violently explode to
generate millions of microscopic jets of liquid. Ultrasound is propagated through a series of rarefaction and
compression waves induced in the liquid molecules through which it passes. Cavitation bubbles are formed when
the rarefaction cycle exceeds the attractive forces of the liquid molecules. These bubbles are generated by
rectified diffusion.
The advantages of using sonochemical methods for sample preparation include high purity, narrow size
distributions, controllable reaction conditions and the ability to form nanoparticles with uniform shapes and rapid
reaction rate. It also improves the performance of phase transfer catalysts and their reactivity. High intensity
ultrasonication is very efficient for deagglomerating and dispersing the particles into liquid media.
Ultrasonic technology finds wide applications in fields like ultrasonic cleaning of continuous materials,
ultrasonic mixing in cosmetic industry, ultrasonic devices for extraction, for dispersing and reducing the size
of pigments in inks, to reduce the size of nanomaterials and emulsifying polymers in paint and coating industries
and in manufacturing amorphous nano-phase particles. Sonodynamic therapies for cancer and shockwave
lithotripsy for kidney stones are bio-medical applications of sonochemistry. It is also used in food processing
industry.
