50 Original article PREVALENCE OF TRICHOMONIAASIS AND ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN ATTENDING ANTENATAL CLINIC AT SELECTED HEALTH FACILITIES WITHIN KADUNA METROPOLIS, NIGERIA Auta, K. Submitted: May, 2020; Accepted: November, 2020; Published: December, 2020 ABSTRACT Trichomoniasis is the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted infection. It has been recognized as a cosmopolitan parasite of genital tract of both male and female. The Socio- demographic relationship of the infection among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at Sabon tasha General Hospital and Yusuf Dantsoho memorial Hospital, who were not placed on any treatment for sexually transmitted infection for the past 30 days prior to the period of the study is conducted. A total of 405 pregnant women were recruited for the cross-sectional study. (204/405) from Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital and (201/405) from Sabon tasha General Hospital who are within the age range of 17 and 45 years. Wet mount was prepared by emulsifying the vaginal exudate on a drop of normal saline placed on a greese-free microscopic slide, and viewed microscopically for the presence of motile trophozoites Add brief methods here The highest rate of infection was recorded among pregnant women in their first trimester and the least was observed among those in their third trimester. The overall prevalence of 25 (6.17%) was observed with 9(4.48%) and 16(7.84%) for STGH and YDMH respectively. Educational status was found to be significantly associated with the prevalence of infection (P<0.05). However, the infection rate between the two health facilities indicate that there is a variation with level of education, nature of hygiene, sexual habit and location. This study, recommends sexual and health education at every antenatal clinic and routine screening for Trichomoniasis among pregnant and women of reproductive age in order to curb out the disease.
