Abstract
The first burrower bug species recorded in Guinea-Bissau, Chilocoris serratus n. sp., is described and compared with mor-
phologically related species. Additionally, an annotated checklist of Afrotropical species of the genus Chilocoris is pro-
vided.
Key words: new species, taxonomy, morphology, Afrotropics
Introduction
Although the burrower bug (Hemiptera: Cydnidae) fauna of the tropical regions of Africa was revised by
Linnavuori (1993) and many new Cydnidae records and new species were reported from the Afrotropics in the last
decade of the XXth century and the first decade of the present century (Czaja & Lis 2002, 2003; Lis 1994b, 1996,
1999b, 1999c, 2000a, 2000b, 2001a, 2002a, 2002b, 2002c, 2003a, 2003b, 2003c, 2006a, 2006b), there are still new
data provided for Afrotropical species of this family (Lis 2011, 2013, 2015; Lis & Ziaja 2014, Lis & Lis 2014,
2015, 2016; Lis et al. 2014; Pluot-Sigwalt & Magnien 2011; Magnien 2014).
However, besides countries with numerous burrower bug species, e.g. Nigeria (51 species) and Cameroon (49
species), there are also countries with only a single Cydnidae species reported (e.g., Lesotho, Liberia, Benin, or
Djibouti), or even without any Cydnidae data at all (i.e., Guinea-Bissau, or Malawi).
The present note provides a description of the new species, Chilocoris serratus from Guinea-Bissau, which is
the first burrower bug recorded in this country. Moreover, at the end of the paper, an annotated checklist of the
Afrotropical species of the genus Chilocoris Mayr, 1865 is presented.
Taxonomy
Chilocoris serratus new species
Etymology. The species is named after the serrated lateral margins of the pronotum and hemelytra.
Diagnosis. As suggested by its name, the new species differs from all other Afrotropical representatives of the
genus by the serrated margins of pronotum and hemelytra (Figs. 1, 3–4). In these characters, it is somewhat similar
to the Australian Ch. centrostephoides J.A. Lis, 1999 and Malaysian Ch. costatus J.A. Lis, 1994. However, the
newly described species can be easily separated from both those species by better developed serration of the lateral
margins of the pronotum and hemelytrae (Ch. centrostephoides bears only a single distinct denticle on each lateral
margin of the pronotum, and its costal margins are normally developed; in Ch. costatus, only the costal margins are
serrated, whereas the lateral pronotal margins are normally developed).
