The answers to these questions have changed over time and were first addressed within the boundaries of phi- losophy, and then, in the second half of the nineteenth century, with the emer- gence of biology as an independent science, they were placed on a scientific basis. N. C. Paulescu was a scientist who came to the fore at the beginning of the twen- tieth century with his thoughts on life. He gave three lectures on the subject at the University of Bucharest, which were published as Physiologie Philosophique: Finalité, matérialisme, âme et Dieu. Ankaralı Ali Rıza translated the first two lectures of this work into Turkish shortly afterwards and published them as a serialised in Sırat-ı Müstakim. Although he planned to translate the third lecture, he could not realise this plan. In this article first discusses the identity of Anka- ralı Ali Rıza and the reasons why he translated Paulescu's work, then briefly in- troduces Paulescu and his works, and finally discusses the ideas in Physiologie Philosophique: Finalité, matérialisme, âme et Dieu through Ankaralı Ali Rıza's partial translation. Keywords: Philosophy of Biology, N. C. Paulescu, Ankaralı Ali Rıza, Sırat-ı Müstakim.
