The examples analyzed in this paper show that the Russian net has additional mean- ings as compared to the German nein (as well as to the English no) because the Russian net is connected with both dictum and modus, i.e. not only with the propositional part of the utter- ance. Many of the cross-linguistic differences discussed here relate to the specific properties of the discourse structure. Thus, the Russian discourse is characterized by a hypertrophied coherence, addressing various levels of content, and focusing on interpersonal relationships between interlocutors, which they steadily profile in the course of conversation. Аннотация Слова, выражающие идеи ‘да’ и ‘нет’, в различных языках ведут себя по- разному. Представленный в данной работе анализ языкового материала показывает, что русское слово нет имеет более широкое значение, чем немецкое nein (или чем английское no), поскольку русское нет может быть связано не только с диктумом, но и с модусом высказывания—то есть, оно не всегда относится к пропозиции выска- зывания. Многие из проанализированных в работе межъязыковых различий укорене- ны в особенностях структуры дискурса, характерных для разных языков и культур.
