AI offers advantages such as enhanced design precision, waste reduction, and supply chain efficiency. Still, it also presents drawbacks, including increased consumption, ethical concerns, and the potential displacement of human designers. The study highlights that AI is being adopted in the fashion industry without sufficient attention to its implications, emphasizing the need to priorities sustainability in its usage. A notable gap exists in oversight regarding AI applications and their consequences within the sector. This review while addressing the benefits, challenges, and sustainability considerations of AI in fashion, fills a critical gap in existing literature. Keywords Artificial intelligence, Fashion industry, sustainable transformation, apparel and textile INTRODUCTION Artificial intelligence (AI) has profoundly transformed daily life by enabling the efficient execution of routine tasks, and its impact is increasingly evident in the apparel and textile design industry. This sector encompasses three core processes: apparel design, manufacturing, and selling. AI has become integral to every stage of the industry, from fibre production to end use. Its applications include fashion trend forecasting, pattern design, sewing automation, fabric defect detection, supply chain management, and retail systems[40]. AI techniques, as illustrated in Fig 1., address critical challenges within the apparel and textile sectors and have evolved significantly over time. Fig 1. Artificial Intelligence Techniques AI leverages vast datasets of images and videos to help designers incorporate popular colors, patterns, and styles, enabling faster lead times and enhanced creative innovation. It empowers designers to create groundbreaking and sustainable designs, revolutionizing the fashion design process. Recommendation systems, for example, analyze customer preferences—including price, size, style, and social media activity—to personalize experiences. Prominent retailers like Nordstrom, Nike, Macy’s, and Farfetch use AI -powered chatbots, virtual assistants, and product navigators to enhance the integration of online and offline shopping experiences [34]. AI's applications extend beyond personalization, playing a pivotal role in reducing costs, improving design accuracy, minimizing waste, streamlining supply chains, and optimizing production processes. It equips decision-makers with tools to plan complex production tasks effectively, address urgent quality issues, and customize products to meet unique customer needs. While AI offers significant advantages, its transformative potential also raises concerns about its societal and ethical implications.
