e Kwee Collection at the Fisher Library, University of Sydney: An Annotated List of Chinese-Malay Publications Tom Hoogervorst KITLV and State University of Malang Abstract is is an annotated inventory of the Kwee Collection kept at the Fisher Library, University of Sydney. is unique collection was brought to Sydney in the 1990s by John B. Kwee 郭約翰, who had earlier worked on Chinese- Malay literature at the University of Auckland. A large part of it previously belonged to the author Kwee Tek Hoay 郭德懷. Despite its fascinating contents, the material has not yet received much scholarly attention. is description serves to familiarise it to students, researchers and others who are interested in written sources pertaining to late colonial and early independent Indonesia and/or overseas Chinese communities. Most of the novels, anthologies, poems, pamphlets and educative texts are written in the colloquial Malay of Java, famous for its preponderance of influences from Chinese, Dutch and other languages. Many of these publications are rare and, in some instances, unique to the Fisher Library. is list contains bibliographical data of each publication, followed by historical, cultural and contextual information as well as relevant samples, to which translations have been added. e following thematic division is maintained: 1) poetry, 2) original fiction, 3) translated Chinese fiction, 4) translated European fiction, 5) religion and morality, 6) Chinese-Malay miscellanea, and 7) other miscellanea. References to related Chinese-Malay publications and relevant previous scholarship have also been added.
