Role of High Performance Concrete In Sustainable Construction: A Review on High Performance Concrete Mix Design Expert System M. Jamil, M.F.M. Zain, I.M.S. Usman, M.K.A.M. Sulaiman Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Malaysia Abstract As the premier material in construction industry across the world, concrete has major role in the effects of construction to our environment. Consumption of concrete is very high due to extensive use of concrete in many structural applications. The rapid infrastructural growth in developing countries and production of many by-product as waste material making high role to concrete producers in inventing sustainable product. Recently, the development of high performance concrete supports the sustainable construction by using waste materials in concrete that will provide an efficient solution to disposal problem, sustainable development and concrete production cost. This paper present an expert system that was developed to efficiently disseminate innovation and simplicity in designing high performance concrete incorporating supplementary cementitious material from industrial waste in order to support global sustainable construction. Keywords: High Performance Concrete, Sustainable Construction, Industrial Waste, Expert System 1. Introduction Environmental friendly high performance concrete is a demand in our new generation. By producing environmental friendly HPC, we could reduce the construction industry’s contributions towards global warming and at the same time, utilize accumulated amount of industrial by-product in the correct mechanism. These kind of waste material could be used as valuable additives or replacement for Portland cement which has high energy content. It represent 42% of the total production energy cost [1]. Research on the environmental friendly concrete is being done in large number of countries and the results are positive but what seem to be lacking is the dissemination of this knowledge acquisition to a broader audience [2]. Recently, the generation of industrial waste is increasing at high rates, and the disposal technique of waste in landfills is the most used solution option. However, the waste management could be improved by encouraging the introduction of strategies based on the promotion on prevention, recycling and conversion of waste with a view to their reuse purpose.
