The purpose of this study was to investigate the pre-service mathematics teachers’ gestures towards some mathematical concepts. Data were collected from 11 senior pre-service mathematics teachers. Qualitative methodology was used as research design. Since the gestures and mimics require a very well conducted analysis, each phase of the study was videotaped. Furthermore, pre-service mathematics teachers were observed in their class environment and each participant was interviewed. Two data analysis methods were used: First, descriptive analysis was used in order to determine the type of gestures which had been made by the participants. Second, synchronic analysis method based upon semiotic bundle model, which was developed by Arzarello, was used in order to determine how the gestures uniformed with other semiotics and colloquial language in conveying the intended message. In this study; uniformity of gestures and speech, the meaning added to the speech by the gestures, directing effect of gestures on speech were the significant categories explaining the gestures of participants about basic mathematics concepts. The gestures made by the pre-service teachers during mathematic lessons were categorized as; iconic, kinetographic, adaptor, interacting, deictic, beat, metaphoric, and ideographic gestures. Keywords. Basic Concepts in Geometry, Gesture, Categorization of Gestures, Semiotics, Semiotic Bundle SUMMARY Purpose and Significance: The purpose of this study is ascertaining the gestures being used by the teacher candidates for communication during the process of teaching of the mathematics concepts and categorizing such ascertained gestures. The purpose is, furthermore, presenting how these gestures being used by the teacher candidates are being integrated with mathematical signs and colloquial language being other channels of communication. Moreover, fixed and variable gestures of the teacher candidates intended for the concepts to be handled at the end of the study will be determined. Within the scope of this study, the gestures presented commonly by the teacher candidates when describing a concept, in other words the gestures corresponding to a certain concept for everyone will be tried to be set as “emblem”. The gestures of the teacher candidates being set as “emblems” amongst the ones corresponding to the mathematical concepts may lead for a dictionary intended for the mathematics teaching aimed at the hearing-impaired to be created. The importance of this study is pointing out the role of the gestures in communication and determining the role of gestures in transmitting ideas. In our study, we tried to examine how the semiotic groups by the teacher candidates such as talking, writing and drawing are being integrated with their Geliş tarihi: 26/07/2016, Kabul tarihi: 26/04/2017, Yayımlanma tarihi: 01/10/2017
