ABSTRACT
Theimportanceofintegratingsustainabilityinbusinessespracticeshasgainedincreasingattention
inthefoodsector.Importantsustainableinitiativesinthissectorrefertofoodwastesolutions.Food
wasteisdefinedasfoodintendedtofeedhumans,butusedinanotherway.Thisstudyaimstoanalyze
foodwastesolutionsdevelopedbyBraziliancompanies.Throughamultiplecasestudy,threecases
wereanalyzed.Resultsindicatethatfoodwastesolutionsareincorporatedmainlyincollaborationand
expansion,product,unit,andprice-relatedcategories.Thestudycontributesbyexamininginitiatives
withdifferentactorsthanretailersandwithinthecontextofadevelopingcountry,findingsynergies
anddivergenceswithpreviousstudies.Inaddition,newfoodwastesolutionscategoriesemergedand
complementtheanalysis.

INTRoDUCTIoN
Currently, special attention is given to the topics of food loss and waste (Aschemann-Witzel, de
Hooge,Amani,Bech-Larsen,&Oostindjer,2015).Thishappensespeciallyduetothemajorimpacts
oneconomicandenvironmentalissues,sincethelossandwasteoffoodaffecttheabilitytoachieve
foodsecurity,environmentalsustainability,andfarm-financialsecurity(Richards&Hamilton,2018).
It is estimated that food losses and waste account for one-third of the food produced in the
world,whatrepresentsabout1.3billionfoodtons(FoodandAgricultureOrganizationoftheUnited
Nations[FAO],2013).Thewastageoccursalongthesupplychain,reachingproduction,handling,
storage,processing,distribution,marketing,andconsumptionstages(Lipinskietal.,2013).Asa
consequence,resourcessuchasland,energy,freshwater,andagriculturalinputsarealsowasted
(Beretta,Stoessel,Baier,&Hellweg,2013).Additionally,theenvironmentisdamagedduetothe
increasinggreenhousegas(GHG)emissions(Dorward,2012)andmethane(Graham-Rowe,Jessop,
