Management
Umit Deniz Ilhan
Abstract Technological developments in the historical process brought along trans-
formations that have resulted in revolutions in industry. Starting with the First
Industrial Revolution that took place in the second half of the eighteenth century,
we have experienced revolutionary transformations, the driving forces of which
were steam power (mechanisation), electricity (mass production), electronics and
information technology (automation), and cyber-physical systems (digitalisation).
Besides providing many opportunities and benefits for humanity, these transforma-
tions have brought many threats regarding social, economic, technological, and
environmental aspects. The awareness of these threats encouraged the development
of the awareness of the need to protect the environment in its broadest sense with a
collective consciousness. The understanding of sustainable development has devel-
oped as a result of this collective consciousness and stands for not damaging the
potentials of future generations to meet their own needs while meeting the needs of
the present generations. In this regard, green management, which is all about
implementing healthy, human, and environmentally friendly practices in business
functions, has gained particular importance in digital era. Therefore, the future of
green management appears promising for the sake of sustainable development. In
this process, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by digital technologies
will make it easier to achieve these benefits. Based on this framework, in this study,
green management is examined as a business strategy for sustainable development in
the digital era.
