ABSTRACT
Background. Thyroid dysfunction occurs when the thyroid gland’s is impaired, as evidenced
by elevated or decreased levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4).
Thyroid hormone levels fluctuate, causing changes in the basal metabolic rate (BMR), affecting
energy balance and body weight. Objective. This study aimed to analyze the relationship
between TSH and fT4 and body mass index (BMI) in new adult patients at the Litbangkes
Clinic in Magelang. Method. This research used a cross-sectional method and used secondary
data from the patient’s medical records. The research sample was 173 adult men and women
(>17 years) who visited the Litbangkes Clinic in 2019. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), fT4,
and BMI were the research variables. The Spearman Rank Correlation statistical test is used
to test hypotheses. Result. The average TSH level of the respondents was normal, namely
0.91±2.17 µIU/mL, while the average respondent’s fT4 level was above normal, at 3.20±5.83
ng/dL. The majority of the participants (55.5%) had a normal BMI, with a mean of 23.74±4.57.
The Spearman Rank Correlation test shows that there is a significant relationship between TSH
and BMI (p=0.003) with a positive correlation (r=0.228) and there is a significant relationship
between fT4 and BMI (p=0.000) with a negative correlation (r=-0.323). Conclusion. There is
a link between TSH and fT4 levels with the BMI of the patient. The higher the TSH level, the
higher the BMI value of the patient, and vice versa; the higher the fT4 level, the lower the BMI
value of the patient, and vice versa.

Variabel
penelitian adalah TSH, fT4, dan IMT. Pengujian hipotesis dengan uji statistik Korelasi Rank
Spearman. Hasil. Rata-rata kadar TSH responden adalah normal yaitu 0,91±2,17 µIU/mL,
sedangkan rata-rata kadar fT4 responden di atas normal yaitu 3,20±5,83 ng/dL. Sebagian besar
subjek memiliki IMT normal (55,5%) dengan rata-rata 23,74±4,57. Uji Korelasi Rank Spearman
