Lulu Assistant Professor Philippine Women’s University fmlulu@pwu.edu.ph Abstract Women played an essential role in the Philippines' political and socio-cultural landscape. This paper examines the vital role of women, particularly the Kolibugan women, in the 1998 mayoral election in Sirawai, Zamboanga Del Norte. The election narrates a tension between two politicians from the Bisaya and Kolibugan tribes, showing a complex intersection of religion, gender, and conflict in rural areas of the Philippines. The study utilized a case study approach supported by archival research and interviews in the community. This study explores how Kolibugan women navigated barriers in a highly political environment. Through the lens of intersectionality, the paper uncovers the complex relationship between gender, ethnicity, and religion, emphasizing the role of Kolibugan women in safeguarding electoral transparency. The research highlights the socio-cultural and historical tensions between Bisaya and Kolibugan tribes, connecting these conflicts to patriarchal structures that have long marginalized women’s voices and existence. Despite these barriers, Kolibugan women actively participated in the election process by showing public support, forming alliances, and fearlessly protecting the ballot box to maintain the integrity of the election result. Their determination, resilience, and faith in God allowed them to fight threats and violence, highlighting their commitment to promoting justice and democracy. While recognizing the limitations faced by Kolibugan women, which include threats from military forces, restrictive norms, violence from political entities, and community risks. The study reveals their remarkable bravery and determination. By focusing on the experiences of Kolibugan women, this paper promotes gender-sensitive approaches to conflict resolution, promoting inclusive governance in conflicted areas like Sirawai.
