Narrative Studies in Psychology Psikolojide Anlatı Çalışmaları ABSTRACT Since the 1960s, there has been a growing scientific interest in ‘narrative’, one of the fun- damental discursive forms of human interaction, leading to the emergence of an extensive body of re- search. This interest in narrative has also given rise to a new field within psychology, known as ‘narrative psychology’. Narrative psychology conceptualizes narrative as a primary discursive form that gives meaning to human experience, and asserts that human psychology can be understood through narratives. Within this framework, various researchers, guided by their theoretical and analytical interests, have sought to understand the nature of narrative and how it can be examined, developing theoretical and methodological approaches that focus on different aspects. Consequently, numerous issues have been an- alyzed, including the structure, content and meanings of narratives, their interactional and contextual functions, and their relationship with culture and selfhood. In this regard, this chapter first provides a gen- eral theoretical framework for narrative psychology and subsequently discusses approaches that analyze narrative from a hermeneutic/constructionist perspective. Keywords: Personal narrative; hermeneutics; psychology; qualitative research ÖZET İnsanlararası etkileşimin temel söylem biçimlerinden biri olan ‘anlatı’ya yönelik bilimsel ilgi, 1960’lardan bu yana giderek artmış ve ortaya geniş bir araştırma külliyatı çıkmıştır. Anlatıya yönelik bu ilgi, psikoloji alanında da ‘anlatı psikolojisi’ adı altında yeni bir çalışma alanının doğmasını sağlamıştır. Anlatı psikolojisi, anlatıyı deneyimlerimizi anlamlı kılan birincil söylem biçimi olarak ele alır ve insan psikolojisinin anlatılar aracılığıyla anlaşılabileceğini savunur. Bu çerçevede, farklı araştırmacılar kendi teorik ve analitik ilgileri çerçevesinde anlatının doğasını ve nasıl incelenebileceğini anlamaya çalışmış, farklı noktalara odaklanan teorik ve yöntemsel yaklaşımlar geliştirmişlerdir. Böylece, anlatıların yapısı, içerikleri, anlamlandırılma biçimleri, etkileşimsel ve bağlamsal işlevleri, kültürle ve benlikle ilişkisi gibi birçok mesele analiz konusu edilmiştir. Bu doğrultuda, bu yazıda, öncelikle anlatı psikolojisine ilişkin genel bir teorik çerçeve sunulmakta ve ardından anlatıyı yorumsamacı/inşacı perspektifle analiz eden yaklaşımlar aktarılmaktadır. As an object of study, ‘narrative’ has attracted the interest of various disciplines—particularly from the 1960s onward—including sociolinguistics, commu- nication studies, history, sociology, and psychology, ultimately developing into an in- terdisciplinary field. 1 The roots of narrative research can be traced back to narratology studies of the 1960s. The term “narratology” was first introduced by Tzvetan Todorov in 1969, who defined it as the “science of narrative.” 2 Narratology researchers have fo- cused on analyzing the internal structure and components of narratives, distinguishing them from other forms of discourse, and identifying different narrative styles.
