How might queerness inform our understanding of anti-gentrification activism? Two distinct yet interconnected visual projects guide this inquiry: (1) Gentefied’s “The Mural” episode, based in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, and (2) the defacement case of Manuel Paul’s Por Vida (2015) mural in San Francisco’s Mission District barrio. Reading these cultural works together, the article traces the intracommunal contestations that arise in the gentrifying barrio when queer Chicane/Latine peo- ple make claims to public space. Critically examining the role of homo-normative affects (love), the article offers a critique of queerness as an identity, aesthetic and politics. By turning to the Por Vida mural, the article establishes that queerness within anti-gentrification activism must extend beyond the politics of representation. Keywords Gentrification · Queer · Barrio · Placemaking · Chicano · Latino · Muralism Resumen El muralismo chicano queer y las narrativas populares de gentrificación dan pie al presente análisis sobre la creación de lugares, la política de la violencia, y los paisajes de barrio. ¿Cómo podría el ser queer informar nuestro entendimiento del activismo antigentrificación? Dos proyectos visuales distintos aunque interconectados guían nuestra indagación: 1) El episodio de Gentefied “The Mural”, ambientado en el bar- rio de Boyle Heights del Este de Los Ángeles y 2) el caso de la desfiguración del mu- ral Por Vida (2015) de Manuel Paul en el barrio de La Misión de San Francisco. Al unir la lectura de estas dos obras, el artículo traza las contestaciones intracomunales que surgen en un barrio en proceso de gentrificación cuando personas de la comu- nidad chinana/latina queer reclaman el espacio público.
