Developing and Piloting a Qualitative Instrument to Gather Teacher Feedback in SLA Classrooms: A Working Paper Marie-Emilie MASSON Abstract Background: This paper details the development of a qualitative instrument to gather data on teacher feedback used in SLA classrooms stems from the conceptual gap on feedback and its uses between second language acquisition (SLA) and general education (GE) research. While GE has validated most of the claims made in SLA with regards to the impact of feedback in the classroom, SLA has tended to focus primarily on certain types of feedback, largely corrective in nature. The author will attempt to create a tool which can apply a different model of feedback use in the SLA classroom, and possibly lead to a better understanding of what feedback teachers are aware of using and how they choose to use that feedback in the classroom. Aims: The goal for this paper is to outline the development of an observation tool for collecting different types of feedback used by teachers in the second language classroom in a Japanese tertiary setting. Sampling: Drawing from theory of feedback from GE and SLA, and previous instruments adopted in the field, new instruments were developed. These were used in classroom observations involving two native English-speaking KSU teachers. Each teacher was observed twice. The sessions were recorded in video and audio format for later review. Method: The types of feedback examined were concepts from the literature in second language acquisition (SLA) and general education (GE) as well as any characteristics observed in preliminary observations. Various instruments were tested out during classroom observations and modified based on the researchers’ post-observation discussions. Results: A final instrument was created incorporating existing theory on feedback characteristics in GE and SLA applicable to the KSU context. The instrument will be used in spring semester 2011 to collect data from a wider sample of teachers. Background: 第二言語教育 (SLA) の授業環境で、教師のフィードバックの データを収集する質のある記録ツールの開発は、フィードバックの概念
