211 5HVHDUFK+LVWRU\ While working at Nazlet Khater 1 and 3 (see chap- ters 3 and 5) some pits for stratigraphic purposes have been dug in the surroundings of Nazlet Khater 3. It was at that occasion that the Nazlet Khater 4 site was dis- covered. Extensive excavation took place during the 1982 and the 1987 campaign. A short visit during the 1991 campaign gave the opportunity to sample aeolian sands for optical dating. 6LWH*HRPRUSKRORJ\ Nazlet Khater 4, near Tahta, Upper Egypt, is situ- ated on a Nile terrace remnant, 61 m above sea level, 10 m above the present floodplain, near a protruding limestone cliff (fig. 2.1, 8.2). The limestone cliff is steep and high (fig. 8.1). The area between the NK4 site and the valley cliff is slightly sloping up over some 300 m, forming a pediment, eroding the Eocene (Thebes) limestone formation and green silts and fine sands. It is partially covered with limestone scree. 1$=/(7.+$7(5 $1833(53$/$(2/,7+,&81’(5*5281’&+(570,1( Pierre M.
